Wisconsin’s State Superintendent, Jill Underly, is once again advocating for the use of the state’s budget surplus to benefit schools.
She suggests that if lawmakers directed some of the $4 billion surplus toward education, it could help reduce the property tax increases.
Underly’s comments follow a report by the Wisconsin Policy Forum, which highlights that local school tax hikes are contributing to the steepest rise in property taxes in the state in nearly 20 years.
Underly has consistently argued for using the surplus for public schools, but despite her efforts, both lawmakers and Democratic Governor Tony Evers have stated that such a proposal is unlikely to move forward.
