Devin Williams, arguably one of the best, if not the best, relievers in major league baseball the last five years, is no longer a Milwaukee Brewer.
The Brewers have traded Williams to The New York Yankees in exchange for veteran left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Caleb Durbin, and cash.
The 30-year-old Williams leaves Milwaukee with an impressive win-loss record of 27 and 10, an ERA of 1.83, and 68 saves.
He was named National League Rookie of the Year in 2020 and is known for one of the most devasting changeups in baseball.
Cortes is a seven-year major league veteran, and Milwaukee will be his fourth major league team. He has 33 career wins with an ERA of 3.80.
Durbin’s attributes are his eye for getting on base and his speed. He caught the attention of many in The Arizona Fall League, where the Yankees were thinking of keeping him to lead off and play second base this season.
Brewers GM Matt Arnold says more deals are likely in the offing as the Brewers look to find replacements for Williams and shortstop Willy Adames, who’s now in San Francisco.
