Ascension has revealed that a recent cyberattack exposed the personal information of over 5.6 million individuals.
The hospital confirmed last week that the hack, which occurred in May, impacted this large number of people.
However, both Ascension and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report that only 500 individuals have come forward claiming their data was misused or compromised.
The attack, which was a ransomware incident, disrupted Ascension’s network for several weeks.
A report from last week stated that cybercriminals accessed sensitive data about patients and employees, including social security numbers, birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and home addresses.
