A reward program for fish caught in certain bodies of water in the Green Bay area will be returning in 2025.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced the return of the Green Bay walleye reward tag study after its success in its first year in 2024.
DNR staff will begin tagging up to 5,400 walleyes in major spawning areas near Green Bay, including the Bay of Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay, along with the Fox, Oconto, Peshtigo, and Menominee Rivers.
5,000 walleyes will be tagged with a yellow tag, while 400 will receive a red tag.
These yellow tags will offer information about the fis,h such as possible age, location, sex, and more, while the red tags will say “REWARD $100” with a date that signifies when the reward remains valid.
Anglers are encouraged to report both yellow and red-tagged fish to the DNR to help further their study on walleye in the region.
If a tagged fish meets all requirements to be harvested such as bag limits, size, or seasonal restrictions, individuals may harvest them but are asked to send the tags back to the DNR at 2984 Shawano Avenue in Green Bay.
