A local State Senator’s bill aimed at giving Vietnam Era Hmong and Laotian Soldiers veteran status has taken its first step toward becoming law.
The Senator Andre Jacque penned bill has passed a Senate Committee vote with bi-partisan support.
Sen. Jacque explained the bill “honors the courage and extraordinary sacrifice of these unsung heroes who put their lives on the line for the values and beliefs that we revere as Americans.”
The bill would, specifically, expand the state definition of “veteran” in Wisconsin statute to include individuals who honorably served in Special Guerilla Units operating in Laos from February 28, 1961, to May 7, 1975.
With veteran status, these key pieces to the American war effort would qualify for certain state veterans’ benefits, following proper documentation and a thorough U.S. Department of Defense review.
Sen. Jacque elaborated, saying, “This legislation provides long overdue recognition and appreciation for the bravery and sacrifice of these unsung heroes. We have an opportunity to correct our statutes and ensure that their service to freedom and our country will not be forgotten.”
The next step for the bill is a vote by the full Senate and Assembly before going to Governor Tony Evers’ desk for final approval.
