Mary Ann (Anhalt) Salm, age 90, peacefully found her way home on January 19, 2019 with her family at her side. She had been a resident of the Pine Haven Community for the past four years. She was born on August 13, 1928, the youngest daughter of Peter and Margaret (Schad) Anhalt of St. Nazianz. Mary Ann attended St Gregory’s Catholic School, St Nazianz, and graduated with the Class of 1947 from Kiel High School.
Mary Ann married Andrew Salm on June 19, 1948 at St. Gregory Catholic Church. They farmed together in the Town of Meeme for 40 years. After her children were raised, Mary Ann worked at Baldwin’s Men’s Wear, Manitowoc, as a seamstress for 14 years until Andrew became ill. She was his compassionate and patient caregiver for many years. Andrew passed away in 2008, just a half year shy of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mary Ann enjoyed gardening and had huge productive vegetable gardens and berry patches. Her beautiful flower gardens were a testament to her love of flowers. Her kitchen table was a showcase for her flower arranging ability.
She was an excellent cook and baker and the family’s hotline for any household questions and advice. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and knitting. One of her favorite pastimes was “adopting” well-worn dolls from garage sales, giving them a makeover and sewing beautiful new outfits.
Mary Ann is survived by six children, Richard (Grace) of Meeme, Gerald (fiancé Kathleen) of Meeme, Katherine (James) Buchholz of Plymouth, Robert (Clara) of Meeme, Daniel (Lori) of Manitowoc, and Marjorie of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is further survived by 18 grandchildren, and 30 great- grandchildren, in addition to numerous sister-in-law’s, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Andrew, daughter-in-law Julie Salm, her sisters Leona (Louis) Heinzen, Anita Anhalt, and Hilaria (William) Pfeffer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 11928 Marken Rd., Kiel with Rev. Anthony Ibekwe officiating. Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Zimmer Westview Funeral & Cremation Care Center, W2132 Garton Rd. Sheboygan and again on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 10:00 AM until the time of mass at the CHURCH.
The family would like to thank the Pine Haven Community for their compassionate and loving care. A special thanks to St. Nicholas Hospice for their attention to Mom’s comfort and spiritual needs. We are grateful to the volunteers from Blessed Trinity Parish, Sheboygan Falls, and Eucharistic Minister Joseph, for their weekly prayers and communion services.
Mary Ann will be remembered as a kind and caring mother, grandma and great- grandma. She was a very generous person and her greatest joy was to give her family something to take home, whether it was vegetables from her garden, a flower bouquet, something she baked, or her latest craft project.
Whenever her family left her house Mary Ann had a German phrase to wish them well on their journey home. Now we say to you, Mom, “Komm Gut Heim” (Come home good!).
