Cleanup, Damage Assessments Continue In Flood Ravaged Burlington

Cleanups and damage assessments continue in Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties in the aftermath of eight inch downpours both Monday and Wednesday. Eighty five National Guard troops directed traffic away from flooded roads and bridges in Burlington, and they checked 120 damaged houses to make sure residents were okay. Governor Scott Walker toured parts of Burlington — and he said the Fox River did not look as bad as he feared, after it crested Thursday at more than five feet above its flood stage. Officials worried that the Echo Lake Dam could burst and wipe out bridges further down the Fox River, but a D-N-R official said the dam had not failed as of late Thursday afternoon. Burlington Police say the damage will be “unprecedented” — the Red Cross opened shelter at Burlington High School for those with nowhere else to go — and an overnight curfew from ten to six will stay in effect until further notice.
