Madison golfer Steve Stricker was one above par after 12 holes of his first round overnight at the British Open in Southport, England. Stricker was tied for 21st as the first players were finishing their final two holes at Royal Birkshire. The 50-year-old Stricker has occasionally passed up trips across the Atlantic Ocean for the year’s third major. But now, he says he appreciates every major — especially after battling to win a 36 hole qualifier in June to make the field for his home state U-S Open at Erin Hills, where he tied for 16th. Stricker had qualified for the British Open last summer, when he tied for fourth at Royal Troon in Scotland — and he’s coming of a solid showing at last weekend’s John Deere Classic where he tied for fifth.
