The state Justice Department says a five year veteran of the Kewaunee County sheriff’s department fired the shot that killed a knife wielding suspect nine days ago. Officials said Tuesday that deputy Jamie Tlachac is on administrative leave along with three other officers whose roles were not disclosed — sheriff’s sergeant Dustin Smidle and deputy Jordan Salentine, and Kewaukee city police officer Brian Gale. The officers were called to the town of Franklin the night of August 21st to check out reports that a man was threatening a woman and several neighbors with a knife — and Tlachac shot and killed 22-year-old Tyler Whitmire as he confronted the officers. The state continues to investigate, and its final results will be given to prosecutors to consider possible charges.
