Republican state lawmakers want to end the required sale of reformulated gasoline in Metro Milwaukee. It’s been 22 years since the federal E-P-A told Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties to sell only reformulated gas that cuts down on ozone polluting smog. The bill would ask the E-P-A to end the mandate for reformulated fuel, and the G-O-P authors say the benefits of the product have disappeared because regular gas and modern vehicles are now more environmentally friendly. Reformulated gas has been running about 25 cents more expensive per gallon — and Assembly Republican Jesse Kremer of Kewaskum says drivers are crossing county lines to buy cheaper fuel, hurting hometown businesses. But Tyson Cook of Clean Wisconsin says more needs to be done to reduce ozone and reformulated gas is still effective.
