This snowmobiling season has been quite deadly compared to last year.
The Wisconsin DNR is reporting that 17 people have died while snowmobiling in the state this season, and three people died just this past weekend. Compare that to all last season where 16 people died.
The DNR says that historically February is the deadliest moth for the snow sportsters, with alcohol speeding, driver inexperience and operating errors are the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities.
DNR Conservation Warden Lt. Martin Stone spoke about staying safe on the trails, commenting “Safe snowmobiling means you must operate within your specific capabilities, operating at safe following distances when riding with others and use the right speeds for the terrain, daylight or night riding.”
