UPDATE 4 pm 3/13/2020: Just after 4 pm on Friday, March 13th Governor Tony Evers has signed an executive order for statewide school closure.
Update from Manitowoc Public School District on closure
The Manitowoc Public School District has taken precautions to help combat the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus.
Superintendent Mark Holzman says guidelines implemented and effective immediately include canceling all events of gatherings outside the typical school day that are expected to include 250 or more people, suspending all field trips and staff travel outside the district (with exemptions considered and only to be approved by the Superintendent’s Office), limiting all visitors to their buildings with parents and visitors only having access to main offices and all community use of the MPSD Building is suspended with the exception of the YMCA wrap-around care at Franklin and Riverview Elementary Schools.
All these measures will be enforced through April 13th. Holzman says they took these steps in accordance with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommendations to limit large community events and gatherings to protect the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, and community. The DHS currently does not recommend closing schools as they along with other entities, such as health care facilities, are considered essential gatherings.
The MPSD Superintendent adds that they currently plan on keeping Spring Break at its current slot of March 21st through 29th but is subject to change. MPSD continues to monitor and respond to the rapidly fluid and changing situation to communicate all necessary information as quickly as possible.
