With shortages of sanitizers, disinfectants, masks, and paper products seen throughout the country since the COVID-19 virus first surfaced, BBB warns that websites selling these and other related products have also surfaced.
The BBB has been busy investigating several sites and complaints received since mid-March. One such site was popumart.com. Ten complaints have been received from consumers in seven states. According to complainants, they responded to ads on social media sites for face masks and hand sanitizers, but the ordered products were not received.
That website no longer exists, but it is a good example of how scammers are using technology to their advantage. The easiest way to make sure you are dealing with a legitimate business is by ensuring the website begins with “https”, as that indicates a secure website.
