According to Woodland Dunes Nature Center Executive Director Jim Knickelbine, we’re now at the peak of bird migration. He says a lot of birds that spend the winter in the tropics are moving up into Wisconsin.
Knickelbine added the volume-of-birds lately has been really impressive…with orioles, hummingbirds, sedge wrens, and tiny kinglets.
As for shorebirds, they’re returning to Lake Michigan at a good rate now and we’ll soon see ‘pelicans’ arriving as well. He says those birds literally travel thousands of miles to get here.
Knickelbine said the Lake Michigan shoreline is a very special place for migratory birds.
