Just as it appeared that things were starting to look up in Manitowoc County as far as COVID-19 is concerned, a huge spike in deaths was reported over the weekend.
According to the Health Department reports, on Saturday a whopping 9 deaths were confirmed to be linked to COVID-19. Seven of those deaths were within the city of Manitowoc, while the remaining 2 were from other cities.
Two of the individuals were under the age of 75, one was between 76 and 85 years old, and six were over the age of 86. The death toll now sits at 47.
However, there was some good news over the weekend, as the number of recoveries nearly doubled the number of new cases in the county. 126 new cases were confirmed with 43 on Friday, 53 on Saturday, and 30 on Sunday, while 243 new recoveries were reported. 103 of those came in on Friday, 81 on Saturday, and 59 on Sunday.
The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the 10 hospitals in the Northeast Region declined by 4 to 107, and the percentage of ICU beds in use fell six points to 76%.
As of the latest report by the Division of Public Health, Sheboygan County has surpassed 10,000 cases. 67 new cases were reported on Friday, giving them a total of 10,010.
The number of patients who have recovered rose by 152 top 8,309, while 3 more deaths brings that total up to 78. 1,623 cases do still remain active, while 37,798 tests have come back negative.
